I believe that children should have spaces to play and develop with other children. There is no reason why this playground has to look like this. There is no reason why it can't have some minimal repairs to get it back into a safe state of operation. No one should have to fear for their child's safety at a neighborhood playground.
Below are some pictures I took while at the park.

Nasty stuff
What they really need in this park are some cameras to deter the adults from sitting in it and drinking forties all day.
This park is a disgrace, and nuisance. I was at a funeral across the street, and watched the riff raff come in and out over two days.
I didn't see any kids in the park, other than the ones in strollers- where mom was sitting on a bench getting high.
It is clear that this park was refurbished and upgraded with newer equipment, apparently the animals up there destroyed it.
What a waste of tax dollars.
Matt, weren’t you supposed to be some type of community guy?
Get to work!
Awful. Once upgrades are made how long before things begin to deteriorate again? Is there any history at other parks to turn to? If a restoration is done how long before it might need another or at least a patch job.
Someone should alert the councilperson who directs the committee on urban recreation! Let that person know that dangerous conditions exist in that playground. I'm sure that councilperson has never even heard of Elliott so a comprehensive educational campaign may be in order.
Elliott has become a blight nightmare and the only reason I am still there is hope, hope someday that it will get better. That park should be abolished and torn down. Ever since I was a kid living in that neighborhood, nothing nice could be put in place because no one knows how to treat anything and that was back in the 70s, how much more now in 09? I walk my dog through there in the mornings and just shake my head at the trash that is lying a couple feet from the trash cans. Now look at the park that is next to the Carnegie Library in the West End. That is a nice park and the kids enjoy it and respect it. Yes, blow the park up for all I care. It is a nuisance and I get tired of the noise from the kids walking up my alley to go home at 8, 9 and sometimes 10:00. They just scream and carry on. I have seen Matt go out and clean up the neighborhood but he is the only one who does it. One person cannot do it, it has to be a community effort.
You know as well as I do that most parents wouldn't take their kids to that park if the entire thing was rebuilt to brand new. The previous comment about cameras being installed is an excellent idea. The only problem with that, is unless it's a live feed to someone monitoring the cameras, no one will know whats going on until an actual crime is committed. I don't think they check those randomly. What the city should do is build a small "parklet" at the corner of Lorenz and lakewood on that empty lot. Maybe it'll keep the 10-20 kids that play in the middle of the street there safe. I fear that one day, a car is going to come around that corner and hit someone.
have you tried calling mayor ravenstahl's 311 line?

I am on top of this. I have met with city officials about this. Corrective action will take place.

Theresa Smith has been contacted about it and she is very concerned about it. I met with Smith on Friday and brought this to her attention and she was at Townsend Park the next day with Rob Kaz.
Theresa is very hands on with this issue and plans on helping to get this park fixed.
I like the idea of creating a parklet at lakewood and lorenz. Not with city tax dollars - but perhaps a community effort with home depot, neighborhood support, and volunteers? Perhaps then the locals would take better care of it?
However - I would not place any BENCHES or Picnic Tables in it - as they only add to places for adults to sit and corrupt the environment.
I noticed the lines that have been painted to discourage speeding. But let's face it - Parents need to keep the kids out of the street, and this is a dangerous intersection.
Don't waste good money after bad here !!!
I agree with the earlier comments - West End park on Walbash looks graet.
We need to step up police presence to keep these dead beats from destroying this community !
Elliott is on a the brink of come back - what they need is FRESH ideas, and leadership. I dont mean ANTI-HOAGIE here, but lets face it the rest of that neighborhood is clueless, and the Hoagie is carrying other peoples water.
I helped get those VASCAR lines painted on Lorenz Avenue.
OK Matt, lets say this corrective action does take place … then what? Is it just a matter of time before it goes to crap again? As the community guy … what do you propose long term to maintain this park and get others involved?
I’m interested in your ideas … other than bitch to your politico friends to get the city to do something. Communities cannot wait for city involvement. Ravanstahl’s approach seems to be just put out fires, show up with cameras, and go back to jock-sniffing. Is this really the system you are relying on to improve Elliott
I like the idea of a parklet too, but no benches or picnic tables. The police were up in Elliott a lot last spring and summer, but since they are also patrolling Beechview and Dormont, their presence is not always there and it is becoming common knowledge. It is louder again in the neighborhood this year too. This has to be a community effort too. People in the community are clueless as to what is going on and Hoagie is the only lone soul out there cutting OTHER PEOPLES' HEDGES, GRASS, PICKING UP TRASH. I give that kid credit, he is trying.
All of the signage in the park has been replaced and the DPW crews will be coming to address all of the other issues.
