City employees behaving badly

WTAE reported yesterday about 6 city of Pittsburgh Finance Department employees who have reported a full day's worth of work when in reality they were out and about doing non work related things such as shopping and just plain ol' going home while saying they were working a full 8 hours on time sheets.

Paul Van Osdol's piece implicated the following workers:

Senior field investigator Archie Donald who was caught shopping downtown at Burlington Coat Factory then going home for the rest of the day.

Investigator Brian Cohen who was caught going to the bakery, the body shop and Giant Eagle in the Waterfront.

Investigator John Lazor who took a 4 hour lunch.

Investigator Tim Grubbs who went to Wendy's in West View and then sat in a park for nearly two-and-a-half lunch break.

Investigator Dorothea Peniel who at 10AM was on her way home then went to a bank in town and never returned to work for the day.

Investigator Darlene Frankwitt who went home early on two different occasions.

The most disturbing part of this report was that these employees all recorded on their time sheets that they were working in different areas of the city for the length of their 8 hour shifts.

What made me laugh the most was the actual log in which these employees record what they do. To me it looked like they wrote their name, time and what neighborhood they were going to be in. No actual work orders but just a generic area they were going to be in. Where was the supervision here? Is Archie Donald who was caught goofing off as well in charge of the other ones? How long has this type of fraud been going on?

City Council President Doug Shields and Councilman Bill Peduto are rightfully calling for swift action into this matter.

This type of stuff has to end. It really does. These folks are supposed to be out doing the city's business but instead they were out shopping and just going home for the day. Hopefully Mayor Luke Ravenstahl follows up on this one and does the right thing and dole out severe punishment for these people who have cheated us taxpayers.

Enough is enough!

Sounds like there should be some open positions in city hall soon.

How is this anti-worker? How would having an opinion on something like this be hurtful?

How does someone get the title anti-worker? Am I against people working?

If anything I would be considered pro-worker. Ask anyone I supervised at HACP while I was there. If anything I wasn't tough enough with the workers! haha

The proof is there with these folks. They were cheating on their time cards.

You surely don't believe that every city employee is doing their job honestly do you? The good majority of workers are working and doing a good job but you would be foolish to ever think there aren't ones like these people who are trying to get over on all of us.

I got a good chuckle on the political suicide file thing. You are in over your head little boy.

Political suicide? Because you report what the news already reported? I think you are doing a service to those who missed it. If people are shopping and chillaxin' on my tax dollars, report away. They should be fired! Keep up the great work, Matt. I think you are keeping your head above water just fine.

What's funny is that I get notices from them anytime I'm late with any of the various taxes businesses have to pay. The city sets it up so payroll expense (that you pay even if you're self employeed and have no payroll) are due Feb 28, 5/31, 8/31, and 11/30 while all state, federal, and the pittsburgh net profit and business priveledge taxes are due 4/15, 6/15, 9/15, and 1/15. ANYTIME I make a mistake or am late I get a notice in the mail. I'm not trying to get away with anything mind you and always reconcile at the end of the year if I catch a mistake. Maybe they're taking a long lunch, but I personally don't want them to do a better job :)
